Propulsion and airPower Engineering Research (POWER) Lab

Mission

Data obtained from tests in the POWER Lab will be used to

support safe operation of aircraft engines.

Special Features

The POWER laboratory is capable of operating two of the three engine stands simultaneously, which supports responsiveness to customer requirements and aggressive program deadlines. The POWER laboratory uses up to three 500 horsepower eddy current dynamometers and one 1500 horsepower eddy current dynamometer, to cover a wide range from small to large GA power plants. Computer Code supports control of the engine to ± 1 rpm and ± 1 horsepower. Data acquisition of the “slow speed†engine parameters occurs up to 100 times per second, and the high speed acquisition of in- cylinder pressures occurs every 0.1 crank angle degree, or 72,000 to 168,000 times per second depending on engine speed. The POWER laboratory also includes both conventional and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) emission analyzers. The POWER laboratoryâ€TMs conventional emissions analyzers monitor gases that are regulated in other modes of transportation and which the aviation industry is taking steps to reduce; these being acid rain forming NO, NO2, and NOx, and greenhouse gases THC, CO, and CO2. The FTIR captures the full spectra, and enables identification of a wide range of unique emissions possibly present in experimental fuels. Special Features include: Data Acquisition; Data Reduction & Analysis; Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) emission
